ABOUT DONALD PALUMBO

Donald Palumbo is presently the Chorus Director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus. He is formerly the Chorus Master at the Metropolitan Opera and other major opera houses. Mr. Palumbo was born in Rochester, NY. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University. His career was launched at the Dallas Opera in 1980s, where he served as the assistant to Roberto Benaglio, the renowned Italian Chorus Master of La Scala. Following a sixteen-year tenure as Chorus Master at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (1991–2007), Mr. Palumbo assumed the same position at the Metropolitan Opera. There he was responsible for the Met Chorus’ participation in more than twenty opera productions each season. His work with the Chorus was honored with seven Grammy Best Opera Recording awards. After stepping down from his position at the Met in June 2024, he returned to the theater in the following season to prepare the Chorus for a new production of Verdi’s Aïda.

Mr. Palumbo has also served as the Music Director of the Chorus pro Musica of Boston and the Chorus Master of the Canadian Opera Company, the Dallas Opera, the Banff School for the Arts Summer Opera Program, the Opera Company of Boston, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. In Europe, Mr. Palumbo has held the position of Chorus Master at the Opéra de Lyon, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Théȃtre du Chȃtelet, and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Palumbo was Chorus Director of the Salzburg Festival, the first American to hold that position.
